Piedmont's Fourth of July Parade: The Details

It's almost time for that hallowed Piedmont tradition, the Independence Day parade.

It's "Stars and Stripes Forever" this year as Piedmont gears up for its annual Fourth of July celebration.

The parade (expect classic cars, bagpipes and plenty of neighborhood entries) begins at 11 a.m. at Highland Avenue and Park Way, marching its way to the finish line at .

The celebration continues throughout the after at Piedmont Park, with entertainment by Big Bang Beat.

Piedmont Scottish Highland Dancers will be dancing a Highland Fling as they march with the Stewart Tartan Pipe & Drum band. The dancers are students in the Piedmont Recreation Department's Scottish Highland Dancing class.

The most happening place to be in the parade will be with Piedmont Connect, the local group working together for a more environmentally sustainable future. Our theme this year is Transportation Alternatives – ways of getting around that use less or no fossil fuels (American Energy Independence!). We have a GREAT line-up of electric and hybrid cars, including a Tesla Roadster, Nissan Leaf, Chevy Volt, Mitsubishi iMiEV, Think City and Toyota RAV 4. And, of course, we will also be emphasizing bikes, scooters, walking, and all other creative forms of transportation that reduce carbon emissions. Participating in the parade is especially fun for kids, so bring the whole family. We are group #59 and will be meeting in front of 7, 15, and 23 Highland Avenue (right where Highland starts at Moraga -- a great location for watching the rest of the parade roll out). The samba group will be close behind us, providing great music to fuel us on! We gather at 10:30 a.m., and the parade starts at 11 a.m. Any questions, contact Margaret Ovenden at 658-2123 or movenden@sbcglobal.net.

I should mention that while Connect has room for more walkers and bicyclists, we've already reached the limit on the number of cars we can have. Also, if you'd like to get a close up look at the electric and hybrid cars, they will be parked at the end of the parking lot outside of the Community Center after the parade.

Thanks to Margaret and Justis Fennell for putting this together. I'll be riding with CONNECT and need helpers distributing candy to the crowds. The City will be undertaking a bike/pedestrian plan in the coming year so come show off your alternative "wheels".
