Piedmont Avenue Crime, Egbert Souse's on Agenda for Community Meeting Wednesday

Oakland City Councilmember Dan Kalb and Capt. Anthony Toribio of the Oakland Police Department will attend.

Oakland City Councilmember Dan Kalb and Capt. Anthony Toribio, commander of the Oakland Police Department's Area 2, plan to attend a community meeting Wednesday night that will focus on crime in the Piedmont Avenue area, including recent shootings outside a local tavern.

Joel Warford, the area's new OPD problem solving officer, is also scheduled to attend.

"There have been up to 5 instances of shots fired outside Egbert Sousé's bar since mid-summer, including two within a week in late October/early November; injuries resulted from the last two," says the announcement from PANIL (the Piedmont Avenue Neighborhood Improvement League), which is hosting the meeting with the Nieghborhood Crime Prevention Council.

"Activity inside and outside Egbert's is described as 'nuisance activity' and can be grounds for revoking their license from the city, or their state alcohol license. Learn how we can help police build the required documentation of this nuisance and criminal activity to end the problems," the announcement says.

Egbert Souse's, a bar at 3758 Piedmont Ave., has been a focus of complaints from neighborhood residents recently.

Street robberies in the area will be a second focus of the meeting.

"Incidents (unarmed and armed) have occurred on  Monte Vista, Fairmount, and John St in the last month," the announcement says.

"In Oakland, as elsewhere, a large majority of these robberies now involve smartphones, as there is an international market for stolen phones. Learn what is being done from the city's side, and how you can be safer."

The meeting will be held Wednesday, Nov. 13, from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at Piedmont Gardens, 110 - 41st St., Oakland. The public is invited to attend. No reservations are needed.
