What's Open, What's Closed on New Year's

Check out holiday hours and schedules for government offices, schools and public transit for New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.

Here's a look at at what will be open and closed on New Years Eve, Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2013, and New Year's Day, Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2014.

City of Piedmont and City of Oakland: City administrative offices are open on Dec. 31 and closed on Jan. 1. Oakland Public Library locations will be open Tuesday, Dec. 31, from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and closed on Jan. 1. Wednesday, Jan. 1, is an Oakland parking meter holiday.

Piedmont Unified School District: Administrative offices are open on Dec. 31 and closed on Jan. 1. Schools are closed for winter break through Jan. 3 and Monday, Jan. 6, is a professional development day. Classes will resume on Tuesday, Jan. 7.

Oakland Unified School District: Administrative offices closed Dec. 31 and Jan. 1. Oakland public schools are closed for winter break through Jan. 3 and will reopen on Monday, Jan. 6.

Garbage service (Piedmont and Oakland): No garbage service on Wednesday, Jan. 1. Customers whose regular service day falls on New Year's Day or later in the week will receive service a day late. 

Alameda County, state and federal offices: Administrative offices are open on Dec. 31 and closed on Jan. 1.

BART: BART will run a normal weekday schedule on Dec. 31 but will extend evening service until 3 a.m. Trains will operate on a Sunday/holiday schedule on Jan. 1, with service beginning at 8 a.m. See the BART website for more information.

AC Transit: On Tuesday, Dec. 31, all AC Transit local and transbay lines will operate on regular schedules. On Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2014, in observance of the New Year’s holiday, all AC Transit local and transbay lines will operate on Sunday schedules.

SF Bay Ferry: San Francisco Bay Ferry will provide normal weekday service on Tuesday, Dec. 31. There is no ferry service on Wednesday, Jan. 1. See the SF Bay Ferry website for more information.

Banks: Open Dec. 31, closed on Jan. 1.

Stores, businesses: Varies. Most restaurants and taverns and some retail stores will be open on New Year's Day.
