Piedmonters Among the Cast of Berkeley Playhouse's 'A Little Princess'

The musical opens this weekend in Berkeley.

Four Piedmont young people are among the cast of A Little Princess, the Berkeley Playhouse's new musical that opens Saturday at the Julia Morgan Theater, 2640 College Ave., Berkeley.

They are Danny DeBare, a ninth grader at Piedmont High School; Malia Lee, a fifth grader at Havens School; Charlotte Levy, a fourth grader at Beach School; and Isabel Cumbelich, a seventh grader at the Bentley School.

The play is based on a short story by Frances Hodson Burnett that was later expanded into a novel. It centers on the story of Sara Crewe, who is treated like a little princess by her adventurer father until he is reportedly killed searching for the mysterious city of Timbuktu. She is then made to work as a servant in her new boarding school, where she uses her imagination to transform a drab institution into a place of magic and mystery.

The production runs through Dec. 8, with performances Thursday through Sunday.
