Two Generations of Piedmont Family at Arts Center This Weekend

Mary Ellen Callahan will perform on Friday evening, while an opening reception for an art exhibit by her father, Jim Callahan, is on Saturday.

From a Piedmont Center for the Arts bulletin:

Mary Ellen Callahan, born and raised in Piedmont, and a professional singer in New York for 23 years, will perform a concert at the Piedmont Center for the Arts on Friday evening, August 30, at 8 p.m.

Her concert is part of a weekend of events celebrating the 2nd anniversary of the Piedmont Center for the Arts, which opened on August 28, 2011.

A graduate of Piedmont High School in 1978, she is spending time in Piedmont in the summer for the second year in a row to beat the heat of the East Coast and spend more time with her family and old friends.

She enjoys a thriving career as a classical soprano soloist and has worked with major symphony orchestras across the country in works including Handel’s Messiah, the Mozart Requiem, Mahler’s Eighth Symphony.

She has performed in Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and the Kennedy Center, among many concert venues.

Best of all for a Piedmont audience, she loves to present the gems of art songs and lieder in the more intimate setting of a recital hall. She has been excited about performing in Center for the Arts since its opening exactly two years ago.

On the night of her concert, she will be performing in the same hall in which her father’s art exhibit is being shown in the Center.

Tickets to the concert are $20 and are available at the door. The Piedmont Center for the Arts is located at 801 Magnolia Avenue, Piedmont.

Also this weekend is the opening reception for Jim Callahan's exhibit of color photographs, oil paintings and sculpture.

Callahan, a longtime Piedmont resident, played French Horn with the San Francisco Symphony for thirty years, and with his wife Margaret, raised eight children.

He somehow found time for many other interests, including painting, sculpture, and photography.

Now both 85 years old, Jim and Margaret live at Piedmont Gardens, and will be showing some of the artwork at the Center from August 30 through September 8, 12 noon-3pm. Artists reception on Saturday, August 31 from 6 to 8:30.
