<p>The Fire Department's chief, 10 professional firefighters and 14 paramedics respond to fire and medical emergencies in Piedmont and provide prevention and safety services to the city's citizens.</p>
<p>At minimum, two engine company officers and two apparatus operators are on duty each day, and the ambulance is always staffed with two paramedics and one paramedic is attached to the engine company daily. Additionally the fire chief, who is the head administrator for the department, is in the office on weekdays.</p> <p>Piedmont Fire's paramedic unit is the oldest continuously operating ambulance service in the state and has been providing Advanced Life Support since 1984. All Piedmont's firefighters are also EMT certified.</p> <p>The department has mutual aid agreements with Oakland for major fire incidents and with Alameda County for hazardous material spills. In turn, Piedmont has provided mutual aid all over the state from San Diego to Eureka.</p> <p>As part of its safety and prevention efforts, the department offers CPR, first aid, and disaster preparedness training. Firefighters also reviews construction plans and will conduct home safety inspections upon request.</p> <p>The department is responsible for enforcing the city's weed abatement rules, responding to complaints of fire hazards such as overgrown brush or limbs hanging over chimneys and issuing citations accordingly. The fire station is also the place to go for bicycle licenses and battery and lightbulb recycling. The staff is happy to give station tours, and even hosts birthday party visits.</p>
