On hot days, the Piedmont Swim Club is a magnet for Piedmonters wanting to cool off in one of the club's three…More outdoor pools.
Though it's a private club, because the facility is located on leased city land and membership represents about a quarter of Piedmont residents, the whole community feels ownership.
The Piedmont Swim Team (which is a separate entity), Recreation Department Programs, and the Piedmont High School water polo teams use the facility. Additionally, the club swings open its doors to non-member residents every Friday, except for the third week of the month when Saturday is the public access day; admission is $5 for children 1 to 15 and $10 for adults.
Earning a "white patch" to swim in the big pool (the one with basketball hoops and diving board) by passing a proficiency test is a rite of passage for Piedmont kids. Swimming lessons and Red Cross authorized safety courses are open to all, and many graduates return as lifeguards and instructors.
