You Ask, Patch Answers: Who Was Sam Allen?

At the corner of Highland and Oakland avenues, right above the spot where the school crossing guard usually stands, there is a sign that says "Sam Allen's Corner."

A Piedmont Patch reader emailed us to ask if we knew who Sam Allen was and why the sign is there. We didn't, but asked around. The following information comes from City Administrator Geoffrey Grote and City Clerk John Tulloch.

"Sam Allen was a crossing guard who was particularly kind to an entire generation of of children," Grote said.

Allen retired some 20 years ago, when he was well past the usual retirement age, and died shortly thereafter, Grote said.

Tulloch did a bit of digging in the Piedmont archives and added the information that the city council declared June 7, 1993 as Sam Allen Day.
