Grand Avenue Cafe-Gallery Closes

Tuesday, Dec. 31, was the last day of business for Monkey Forest Road.

Monkey Forest Road, which combined a cafe, art gallery and furniture store in a one-time bank building at 3265 Grand Ave., Oakland, has closed.

Dec. 31 was the last day of brick-and-mortar business, although the online store will remain open indefinitely, according to Monkey Forest Road's Facebook page.

The store and gallery sold mainly items from Southeast Asia, while the cafe hosted a popular weekly evening of live jazz and added a wine station selling a variety of wines by the glass last spring.

According to an article in the December issue of the Splash Pad Newsletter, the business was sold to Charlie Hallowell, who operates Penrose restaurant next door and Boot and Shoe Service across the street, and his business partner, Richard Weinstein.

Weinstein told newsletter editor Ken Katz that they are thinking of opening a market or similar food-related business — but not another restaurant — in the Monkey Forest Road space.
