A human skull was found Wednesday afternoon near Tilden Regional Park, an Oakland police spokeswoman said.

Officers responded to the area of Grizzly Peak Boulevard, about a half mile west of South Park Drive, after receiving tips regarding a human skull, Officer Johnna Watson said.

When officers arrived, they found a human skull "out in the open," Watson said.

According to an article in the Oakland Tribune, the skull had been placed on a paper plate and surrounded by beads.

Police said the skull appeared to be old but was probably not of Naative American origin, the Tribune article said.
