Police Blotter: Burglar Crawls Through Doggie Door, Steals Jewelry and Laptop

Also, a York Drive resident scared off a man trying to steal loose change from a parked car.

Incidents highlighted in the blotter were recorded in the Piedmont Police Department log from noon on Sept. 13 through noon, Sept. 16. Not all incidents recorded in the log are included here. Information was supplied by the police and does not indicate any convictions.

A burglar stole jewelry and a laptop computer from a home in the 1100 block of Warfield Avenue, the residents discovered when they arrived home Friday evening, Sept. 13.

The intruder entered the home through a large doggie door sometime between 5:45 p.m. and 10:37 p.m., according to Piedmont Police Captain Scott Wyatt.

FRIDAY, SEPT. 13

Auto theft — A Toyota Prius was reported stolen from Wildwood Avenue.

Fallen branch — A large limb from a city tree fell onto a fence on La Salle Avenue. The city's Public Works Department was notified.

Parking complaint — A resident asked for more enforcement of parking regulations in the area near El Cerrito and Jerome avenues.

SATURDAY, SEPT. 14

Lost wallet — A citizen found a wallet during a morning walk on Moraga Avenue. Police were able to quickly locate the owner and return the wallet. Another wallet was found by a citizen on Trestle Glen Road later the same morning.

SUNDAY, SEPT. 15

Identity theft — A Pacific Avenue resident reported that someone fraudulently opened several credit accounts in her name and also used her information to purchase a vehicle.

Suspicious circumstances — A Bonita Avenue resident reported that a man wearing a Batman shirt "took off running" when she she came out of her house about 1:40 p.m. Police located the man a short time later. The man is a local resident who was taking photographs, police said.

Vehicle recovery — Police located a stolen Infiniti parked on Olive Avenue. The radio was missing and the ignition may have been tampered with, police said. The auto was released to its owner.

Petty theft attempt — Police responded when a York Drive resident reported that her husband was "yelling at someone in the street" at 11:39 p.m. Police determined that the husband had interrupted a man trying to take loose change from a parked vehicle. The would-be thief fled south down an alley toward Ricardo Avenue, leaving burglary tools behind, but was not located by police.
