Police Blotter: Home Burglary Attempt, Warrant Arrest, Robbery Nearby in Oakland

Also: Ace Hardware manager catches a thief, Piedmot resident chases off car burglar.

Incidents highlighted in the blotter were recorded in the Piedmont Police Department log from noon on Oct. 14 through noon, Oct. 18. Not all incidents recorded in the log are included here. Information was supplied by the police and does not indicate any convictions.

MONDAY, OCT. 14

Identity theft — A Bonita Avenue resident reported being the victim of identity theft.

Petty theft — A manager at Grand Lake Ace Hardware, 1221 Grand Ave., chased and caught a man who reportedly stole from the store about 5:30 p.m. Police said the store employee was able to recover the stolen property and no police report was desired.

TUESDAY, OCT. 15

Petty theft — Someone cut a license plate and stole registration tabs from a vehicle parked on Kingston Avenue during the night.

WEDNESDAY, OCT. 16

Auto burglaries — A York Drive resident reported chasing off a man who had broken into a parked vehicle about 12:15 a.m. About two hours later, a Piedmont police officer spotted a parked vehicle on Ricardo Avenue where a burglar had attempted to break in via the driver's side door. The vehicle's owner said nothing appeared stolen.

Warrant arrest — An Oakland man was taken into custody after a traffic stop when police learned there was an outstanding $1 million warrant for his arrest. See "Piedmont Traffic Stop Nets Man with $1 Million Arrest Warrant" for details.

FRIDAY, OCT. 18

Attempted home burglary — Police responded to an alert from a security company about a possible break-in on Mountain Avenue about 10:30 a.m. Officers found a rear window broken and the front door partially ajar. The burglar, possibly scared off by the alarm, apparently left without stealing anything, police said.

Outside assist — Piedmont officers helped Oakland police search for two suspects, one armed with a handgun, after five people were reportedly robbed near the corner of Monte Vista and Fairmount avenues in Oakland shortly before 11:30 a.m. They were unable to locate the suspects.
