Police Blotter: Vehicle vs. Tree, Mail Theft, Taxi Fare Evasion

Piedmont police also assisted the OPD with several nearby incidents, including a runaway ambulance patient, an armed robbery outside the Rockridge Safeway and a burglary in progress on Moraga Avenue.

Incidents highlighted in the blotter were recorded in the Piedmont Police Department log from noon on Oct. 21 through noon, Oct. 25. Not all incidents recorded in the log are included here. Information was supplied by the police and does not indicate any convictions.

MONDAY, OCT. 21

Hit-and-run — A vehicle parked on Pacific Avenue was hit sometime during the day, but the driver responsible did not leave contact information.

TUESDAY, OCT 22

Outside assist — Piedmont police assisted the Oakland Police Department when a patient ran away from an ambulance about 4:15 a.m. on Linda Avenue. A friend picked up the patient about 15 minutes later.

Auto burglary — A Grand Avenue resident reported that someone tried to steal her rental van, damaging the ignition in the process.

Pellet guns turned in — A Dracena Avenue resident brought airsoft guns to the police station to be destroyed.

License plate lost and found — A citizen turned in a license plate found in the street near the corner of Wildwood Avenue and Nova Drive. Police were able to contact the owner of the license plate, who planned to pick it up later in the day.

Stolen bike — A La Salle Avenue resident reported that a bicycle was stolen from a rear patio Sunday night.

WEDNESDAY, OCT. 23

No sleeping zone — A man sleeping on the bench at the bus stop at Highland Avenue and Park Way was awakened and sent on his way about at 9:48 p.m.

THURSDAY, OCT. 24

Non-injury accident, DUI — A driver, apparently tipsy, ran into a tree in the 1600 block of Grand Avenue about 1:20 a.m. The driver was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated and transported to the Glenn Dyer Detention Facility in Oakland.

Outside assist, robbery — A citizen flagged down a Piedmont police officer at 9:15 a.m. to report an armed robbery outside the Safeway store at Broadway and 51st Street/Pleasant Valley Road. The robber was armed with a pistol and stole an iPhone, the victim said. 

Found mail — Mail addressed to home on Sunnyside and Olive avenues was found scattered on Howard Avenue and returned to the addressees. Police later received a report of at attempted burglary of a home mailbox in the area.

Petty theft — Someone rifled through an unlocked vehicle on Kingston Avenue and took $20 in cash.

Outside assist, burglary — Piedmont police responded to a 3:10 p.m. report from the Oakland Police Department of a burglary in progress in the 6100 block of Moraga Avenue by two men driving a damaged BMW. The burglars were gone when police arrived, but a Piedmont officer reported that the house appeared ransacked.

Fare evasion — A taxi passenger reportedly ran off without paying the cab driver about 6:50 p.m. on Highland Avenue. The passenger was later located at the Wells Fargo Bank branch ATM, 344 Highland Ave., and was arrested on suspicion of public intoxication. No prosecution for fare evasion was desired, according to police reports.

Traffic hazard — A large tree limb and an upside-down play structure in the middle of the road were creating a traffic hazard near the corner of Inverleith Terrace and Estates Drive a little after 11 p.m. A police officer moved the objects to the side of the road.
