Police Blotter: Where's That Noisy Alarm? and Other Minor Mysteries

Police hunt for a hidden security alarm, figure out why a car was "creeping along" on Cambridge Way and find some stolen cars.

Incidents highlighted in the blotter were recorded in the Piedmont Police Department log from noon on Nov. 18 through noon, Nov. 22. Not all incidents recorded in the log are included here. Information was supplied by the police and does not indicate any convictions.

TUESDAY, NOV. 19

Arrest — One person was arrested following a traffic stop near the corner of Grand Avenue and Mandana Boulevard about 5 a.m.

Stolen vehicle — Piedmont's new license plate reader system alerted police to a stolen vehicle being driven near the corner of St. James Drive and Park Boulevard just before 9 a.m., but officers were not able to locate the vehicle.

Suspicious circumstances — Police questioned two men and checked the neighborhood after a caller reported that the pair had been sitting in a green Honda for 10 minutes on Harvard Road. About 1:30 p.m., one of the men knocked at the front door and said he was looking for a lost puppy, the caller said.

Noise complaint — A caller reported hearing a security alarm sounding on Ronada Avenue about 10 p.m. After a search, police located a malfunctioning alarm in a pile of debris at a nearby construction site.

WEDNESDAY, NOV. 20

Arrest — One person was arrested by Piedmont police after a traffic stop near the corner of Ramona and Piedmont avenues in Oakland about 12:20 a.m.

Vehicle recovery — Police located a stolen vehicle on Maxwelton Road about 5 a.m.

Flat tire — A silver Subaru was reported creeping along Cambridge Way near Manor Drive at about 1 mph shortly before 6 a.m. A officer found that the vehicle had a flat tire and escorted it to a service station for repairs.

Non-injury accident — A caller reported a pickup truck landing on the sidewalk on Grand Avenue about 7:30 a.m. Police were unable to locate the truck.

Grand theft — A Highland Avenue resident reported that a camera was stolen last summer.

Petty theft — Police confiscated lost or stolen license plates from a vehicle near the corner of Oakland and Monte Vista avenues about 3 p.m.

Dog bite — A dog was quarantined after it reportedly bit a 13-year-old boy on El Cerrito Avenue shortly before 4 p.m.

Outside assist — At 4:49 p.m., near the corner of Linda and Piedmont avenues, Piedmont police questioned a man who appeared to match the description of a suspect in an Oakland robbery. The man was later released as there wasn't sufficient evidence to connect him to the robbery.

Residential burglary — A Blair Avenue resident reported that their home was burglarized during the daytime.

THURSDAY, NOV. 21

Surrendered puppy — An animal control officer picked up a young dog surrendered by its Nova Drive owner and took the pup to the Berkeley Animal Shelter.

Identity theft — A Piedmont resident reported unauthorized use of a credit card.

Auto recovery — Police recovered a stolen vehicle spotted near the corner of Grand and Mandana avenues.
