However, Mr D’Ambrosi is correct in every aspect. This is a vanity project: an embarrassing “only in Piedmont” story, a lite version of the PRFO ‘s recent “it’s a gift” adventure. That this has apparently gone straight to the top of the Park Commission’s agenda is astonishing.
The rationale for the project is utter fiction. The ADA angle is an affront to anyone actually working on disability access issues. The article in the Mercury News (why there?) can only be a planted puff piece.
My suggestion is the Beckers take this as a teaching moment, wherein they learn to get real. They could, for example, look for a way to serve some local community by contributing to a solution for an actual need, and where a real difference might be made.
Before committing to another unsolicited project the Park Commission should put aside the…Read More pretentious aspects such as; this is a boy scout project of extravagant scope, put aside the names of the people affixed to the issue (and most likely will be affixed to the plaque), put aside the over ambitious plan to pay for it independently (we’ve seen how that works out in the past), and ask these simple questions: Before this one individual wanted to build the bridge was this even on the Commission’s to do list? And was there a ground swell demand for this project pressuring Piedmont’s attention?
If the answers are NO, then they need to decide if they are being forced to deal with an issue because a single-minded person and family is goading them forward? Leaving a park alone should not be seen as the same as not managing it, sometimes not building is the right answer.
