Piedmont Avenue and Environs — New Capital of Vintage Clothing?

The U.K.'s "The Guardian" singled out several local shops for vintage and specialty shopping.

The Piedmont Avenue, Rockridge and Temescal neighborhoods already have growing reputations as destinations for discerinng food lovers. Now, it seems, they are attracting attention for their vintage fashion shops as well.

The Guardian's U.S. edition recently featured the "top 10 vintage and secondhand stores in San Francisco" in its "Road Trips: USA" section — and the top four are not in S.F. but in Oakland.

The article gives top marks to:

Pretty Penny, 5488 College Ave., which The Guardian calls "one of the most adored vintage shops in the area";

Mercy Vintage, 4188 Piedmont Ave., featuring "well-constructed vintage curated with an expert eye";

Down at Lulu's, 6603 Telegraph Ave., "an explosion of glam style and cult kitsch"; and

Temescal Alley, 470-480 - 49th St., "a true portrait of Oakland up-and-comers and veterans alike."
