Top Stories, Aug. 1-6: Debt Ceiling Vote; Vacation Burglaries

The local Congressional representative's debt ceiling vote and burglaries that occurred while residents were on vacation caught Piedmont's attention in the past week.

THE WEEK'S MOST POPULAR NEWS ARTICLES:

  1. : On Monday, Piedmont's Congressional representative, Rep. Barbara Lee, voted against the bill to raise the federal debt ceiling, which was subsequently passed by the Senate and signed by the president. Lee opposed the bill because of its provisions to cut trillions from the federal budget without guarantees for revenue enhancements.
  2. : Piedmont Police Detective George Phifer reminded residents to take to protect their homes before leaving town after two houses were reported burglarized while the residents were away.
  3. : Though Arizmendi was the top vote-getter among Piedmont area pizzerias, it by no means won by a landslide. Even more poll respondents picked Lo Coco's, Pizza Pazza or Dopo as their favorite.
  4. : Cooper is one of the leaders of Kehilla Community Synagogue, which in 1990 moved from North Berkeley to a former church building found by a member of the congregation who lives in Piedmont.
  5. : New state Assembly maps would put Piedmont in a new district with Berkeley, Albany, Emeryville, El Cerrito, Richmond, Pinole, Hercules, and a small portion of Oakland. The maps if adopted by the California Citizens Redistricting Commission Aug. 15.
