Woof! I Wanna Be Your Mayor!

Primary voting ends Friday for the "Pet Mayor of Piedmont."

Mayor Chiang, watch out! Twenty furry political hopefuls — 18 dogs and two cats — are vying for your job.

The primary round of voting ends Friday in the "Pet Mayor of Piedmont" contest, which benefits the Montclair Veterinary Hospital's Pet & Wildlife Fund. You can see photos of the competing critters and cast your vote by making a donation here.

Successful "candidates" advance to a final round of voting July 1-21, with the winner announced at 1 p.m. on July 21. Finalists will be available for meet-and-greet sessions with voters Sunday afternoons in July at Fentons Creamery, 4226 Piedmont Ave., Oakland.

The competition has a serious purpose — donations support emergency services for sick and injured wildlife. It alternates every other year with a "Pet Mayor of Montclair" contest.

Candidates are sponsored by nearly two dozen Piedmont Avenue businesses and range from a diminutive Yorkie to a sturdy English bulldog.

See the Pet & Wildlife Fund website for more information.
