Jazz at the Chimes Readies for New Season

The Beyond Category Quartet and vocalist Jackie Ryan will perform Jan. 20 in the jazz series' first 2013 concert.

From a Jazz at the Chimes press release:

Jazz at the Chimes kicks off its 2013 season with Bay Area jazz luminaries Larry Vuckovich, Jackie Ryan and John Santos on Sunday, Jan. 20, 2012 at 2 p.m. at Chapel of the Chimes, 4499 Piedmont Ave., Oakland.

The Beyond Category Quartet — led by the versatile pianist/composer Larry Vuckovich — includes percussionist and five-time Grammy nominee John Santos, Perry Thoorsell on acoustic bass and Leon Joyce on drums. Joining the quartet will be the internationally acclaimed jazz vocalist Jackie Ryan.

At this concert, listeners will be treated to an array of musical selections from Vuckovich’s eclectic repertoire.

“I call my group Beyond Category because we play music that embraces swinging bebop, contemporary jazz, modal/on-the-edge/Balkan-Middle Eastern-Roma (gypsy) ethnic fusion, flamenco, Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, down-home blues and jazz tango,” said Vuckovich.

Vuckovich’s quartet will also accompany the gifted vocalist Jackie Ryan who moves audiences with her 3½-octave range and warm stage presence. She will be singing tunes featured on her new CD Listen Here, which will be released on Jan. 15. Concertgoers will hear selections ranging from blues and gospel, to luscious love songs, perhaps a Spanish ballad or a Gershwin tune.

My daughter was a camp counselor at this camp last summer. It is a really unique camp. What aRead More great experience for kids. I wish something like this was available when my kids were young. Parents should definitely check it out!!
