The Waiting Room, a feature-length documentary filmed at Oakland's Highland Hospital, is among 15 films that will advance in the voting process for the 85th Academy Awards, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced Monday. A total of 126 pictures originally qualified in the category, the Academy's announcement said.
The director-producer is Peter Nicks, a Piedmont resident and Emmy Award-winning filmmaker, who gave local residents an early look at the film last July with a free screening at Piedmont Community Church.
The Waiting Room was also recently nominated for an Independent Spirit Award in the best documentary category.
Using a blend of cinema verité and characters’ voiceover, the film offers a raw, intimate and often uplifting look at how patients, staff and caregivers cope with disease, bureaucracy, frustration, hope and hard choices during one typically hectic day in Highland's emergency room.
