Burritos Offer a Lot Of Food For Little Dough
The basic bean and cheese variety can be found at quality taquerias for as little as $2.50.
Those looking to fill their bellies without spending much money can always count on a good burrito, typically packed with rice, beans, salsa and more. Near Piedmont basic bean and cheese burritos usually go for just over $3 while chicken burritos cost a little more than $5.
, at 4070 Piedmont Ave in Oakland, sells a grilled chicken burrito for $6.95 and it comes with rice, pinto beans, jack and cheddar cheese and salsa. A veggie burrito is $5.75 while a vegan option is $6.95. A side order of rice and beans is $2.95. Manager Armando Carmona says Baja is geared toward healthy eating, which means omitting lard and using organic rice and beans, and gluten-free flour tortillas.
The Zagat-rated Cactus Taqueria, at 5642 College Ave, offers a regular chicken burrito for $5.50 while a bean and cheese burrito, known as “Shen’s Burrito” is $2.50. Cactus is dedicated to freshness and sustainability while maintaining traditional flavors, according to its website.

Down the street from Cactus at 5804 College Ave is Las Palmas Taqueria, where a grilled chicken burrito is $4.95, though it can be upgraded with cheese for 50 cents more or with cheese, sour cream, guacamole and lettuce for $1.75 more. A rice and bean burrito costs $3, which can also be upgraded with additional ingredients. Las Palmas makes its own enchilada sauce and uses canola oil instead of lard.
Located at 3256 Lakeshore Ave near Trader Joe’s, sells a bean and cheese burrito for $3.25 while a shredded chicken burrito is $4.95. The Burrito Shop has been around for decades and is a busy neighborhood restaurant offering healthy, fresh and fast meals, according to its website. A second Burrito Shop is located at 5359 College Ave.

On the north side of Lake Merritt at 336 Grand Ave, is Los Cantaros, which sells bean and cheese burritos for $3.25 while a chicken burrito costs $4.95.
Up the hill in Montclair Village is the at 2081 Mountain Blvd, where a bean and cheese burrito is $3 while a chicken burrito with beans, rice and salsa is $5.70. Both items can be upgraded with additional ingredients for about $1.
A few doors down from Las Comadres is , a sit-down Mexican restaurant and tequila bar at 2071 Mountain Blvd. A little more expensive than other casual taquerias, a bean and cheese burrito there costs $4.85 while a chicken burrito is $6.15.
