Alta Avenue Fire Causes Major Damage

The Friday afternoon blaze was knocked down in about a half hour, but firefighters remained on the scene until evening.

A residential fire began about 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 7, in the 100 block of Alta Avenue, according to a Piedmont Fire Department report.

The fire apparently began in the building's basement and spread to the upper level, the report says.

PFD firefighters, assisted by the Oakland Fire Department, had the blaze under control shortly after 2 p.m. but continued looking for hidden pockets of fire for another hour, the report says. A crew remained on the scene until after 7 p.m.
