A search for a robbery suspect in Oakland's Jingletown neighborhood on Monday afternoon shut down streets in the area for hours before officers talked the suspect out of a home where he had barricaded himself, police said today.
The suspect was believed to have robbed a business in the 3000 block of East Ninth Street at about 1 p.m., police spokeswoman Officer Johnna Watson said Tuesday. The suspect ran away after the robbery and witnesses pointed officers after him and provided a description, Watson said.
Police searched the area and requested the California Highway Patrol shut down the nearby Fruitvale Avenue off-ramp from southbound Interstate Highway 880, according to the CHP.
The CHP also lent a police dog to the effort and the East Bay Regional Parks District police provided a helicopter, Watson said.
Police eventually tracked the suspect to a home in the 3000 block of Elmwood Avenue where he had barricaded himself.
Officers eventually were able to make contact with the suspect and he surrendered, Watson said. The Fruitvale off-ramp reopened to traffic at about 6 p.m., according to the CHP.
Police have not released the identity of the suspect.
