Boy, 5, Hit by Car on Lakeshore Avenue

The child's injuries are serious but not believed to be life-threatening, police said.

Bay City News Service—A 5-year-old child was seriously injured when hit by a car while walking in Oakland's Lake Merritt area this evening, an Oakland police officer said.

Police responded to the call at 5:10 p.m. in the 3500 block of Lakeshore Avenue, Officer Kevin McDonald said. (That's between Mandana Boulevard and Prince Street.)

The child was taken to a hospital with head trauma, but his injuries don't appear to be life-threatening, McDonald said.

The Oakland Tribune reported Wednesday night that the boy was in stable condition at Children's Hospital Oakland. The youngster was playing in a park with his family when he darted between parked cars and into the street, where a van hit him, according to the Tribune article.

The driver stopped at the scene and cooperated with investigators, police said.
