Bay City News—A 19-year-old man who was killed Thursday morning in a traffic collision involving a downed tree on state Highway 13 in Oakland was identified as Kevin Almoina Lacanlale by the Alameda County coroner's office.

Lacanlale, a resident of Silverdale, Wash., was a freshman at the University of California at Berkeley.

The tree fell on Highway 13 south of Park Boulevard and a 1996 Toyota driven by the victim struck the tree at about 4:20 a.m., Officer Sam Morgan said.

The car came to rest in the left lane, near the center median, Morgan said. Lacanlale and four passengers who were also in the car got out and were walking around the accident site, Morgan said.

A Ford F-150 then also ran into the tree, and the driver lost control of the truck and struck the Toyota and Lacanlale, who was standing outside the car. Lacanlale was pronounced dead at the scene, Morgan said.

The highway was closed for several hours and southbound traffic diverted at Park Boulevard Thursday morning as crews worked to remove the tree.
