Piedmont Avenue Area Residents Invited to 'Urgent' Meeting on Crime Increase

Oakland City Councilmember Dan Kalb is hosting what he calls an "urgent public safety meeting" next week to address an increase in crime in the Piedmont Avenue area and nearby neighborhoods.

Residents of five police beats (9, 12X, 12Y, 13X and 13Y) are invited to meet with Kalb and Oakland Police Department representatives on Wednesday, July 31, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the College Preparatory School, 6200 Broadway.

Those beats cover the Piedmont Avenue area, Temescal, Rockridge, Upper Rockridge and the North Hills.

Interim Deputy Chief David Downing, Capt. Anthony Toribio, and OPD's problem-solving officers for local beats are scheduled to appear at the meeting.

According to the announcement from Kalb's office, the meeting will address "the recent increase in burglaries, robberies and other violent crimes" in the five areas.

"Join us to share your concerns, hear from OPD as to what they plan to do to address crime in our neighborhoods, and discuss how we can work together to make our neighborhoods safer.," the announcement says.
