Police Blotter: Home Burglary, Speeding Caravan, Noisy Kids

Also: vehicle fire, inebriated pedestrian.

Incidents highlighted in the blotter were recorded in the Piedmont Police Department log from noon on May 17 through noon, May 20. Not all incidents recorded in the log are included here. Information was supplied by the police and does not indicate any convictions.

FRIDAY, MAY 17

Speeders — Beat officers were advised about 3 p.m. of a report that multiple vehicles were seen speeding in the area, apparently headed for Piedmont Avenue. The speeding vehicles included a minivan, limousine and Cadillac.

Noise complaint — A resident complained of a disturbance on Scenic Avenue about 10:20 p.m. Police said it was a juvenile party with parents in attendance and no drinking involved, and was breaking up when police arrived.

SATURDAY, MAY 18

Auto burglary — Two persons smashed a driver's side window and stole a battery from a vehicle on Mesa Avenue at 1:35 a.m. They were gone when police arrived.

Skunk alert — A Sunnyside Avenue resident reported seeing a skunk in a bush about 1:15 p.m.

Drunk alert — A resident reported that a man with a gray beard was walking near Linda and Lake avenues about 3 p.m., carrying a leather jacket and a beer. He appeared to be intoxicated and was yelling profanities. Police located the man nearby and took him into custody.

Car fire — The Piedmont Fire department provided an "outside assist" by extinguishing a car fire on Moraga Avenue about 6:15 p.m. The vehicle was outside the city limits, in Oakland, and the Oakland Police Department was advised.

SUNDAY, MAY 19

Park party — A Hampton Road caller reported juveniles partying in "the bear park" (presumably Crocker Park, which contains a Beniamino Bufano statue of a bear and her cubs) at 12:30 a.m. Although the partygoers were not in evidence when police arrived, they — or some other group of juveniles — resurfaced about 10 minutes later when they tried to tip over a Porta-Potty on Hampton. Again, they eluded police.

Stolen bike — A Scenic Avenue resident reported at 10:39 a.m. that her daughter's bicycle was stolen from their garden.

Residential burglary — A home on Grand Avenue was burglarized about 12:45 p.m., with a door kicked in and the resident's dog escaping outside. Both a neighbor and the resident reported the burglary. Surveillance video shows two men were responsible, according to police.
