Police Blotter: Three Home Burglaries, K9 Unit Search, Injury Accident, Rooster on the Loose

Incidents highlighted in the blotter were recorded in the Piedmont Police Department log, Feb. 6-13. Information was supplied by the police and does not indicate any convictions.

Lots of barking dog complaints this week and several traffic tickets, so keep your pooch quiet and drive safely.

MONDAY, FEB. 6

Cock-a-doodle-do – An animal control officer spotted a rooster at large on Maxwelton Road at little after 1 p.m. and transported it to the Berkeley Animal Shelter.

WEDNESDAY, FEB. 8

Residential burglary – A resident of the 1100 block of Harvard Road reported at 6:26 p.m. that someone had broken into her home during the day. A sliding door was open and tools from construction work going on at the home were taken, probably between 4 and 6 p.m.

FRIDAY, FEB. 10

Residential fire – A fire was reported at 4:51 a.m. in the 300 block of San Carlos Avenue, where construction work was under way on the lower level of the home. The fire, which was outside the building, was extinguished and the house vented.

K9 called in – Piedmont asked for help from an Oakland Police Department K9 unit to search a house and grounds on St. James Drive in the early afternoon. Police said the resident was taking a nap and awakened when someone walked up stairs outside the house, knocked twice on a laundry room door, then kicked in the door. The resident yelled, which apparently scared off the would-be burglar, police said. The K9 search came up empty.

Found phone – A cell phone found at a park was turned in to the Piedmont Police Department by a citizen at 2:05 p.m. About an hour and half later, another citizen turned in a lost bicycle.

Auto accident – Two people were taken to Summit Hospital after their vehicle was rear-ended at Oakland and Grand avenues about 4 p.m. Police said the man driving the other car was taken into custody temporarily on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs (DUI). The PPD is waiting for the results of lab tests before filing charges. Both vehicles were towed.

SATURDAY, FEB. 11

Residential burglary – A resident of the first block of Littlewood Drive, alerted by his alarm service, returned home at 8:19 a.m. and found a door kicked in. Details about what may have stolen aren't yet available.

Stolen scooter – A resident reported about 5 p.m. that a scooter was stolen from a bike rack on Magnolia Avenue the previous day.

MONDAY, FEB. 13

Vehicle break-in – A Bell Avenue resident reported at 11:42 a.m. that someone had broken into his vehicle.
