Some New License Plate Readers May 'Go Live' This Week

Why is this license plate sitting in the middle of Linda Avenue? It was a test plate for part of Piedmont's new license plate reader system.

Some of Piedmont's new license plate readers may be commissioned — that is, up and running — by the end of this week, Police Chief Rikki Goede said Wednesday.

The remainder should be operational within two to three weeks, she said.

That's on schedule for the $678,613 system, which will include 39 cameras at 15 locations around Piedmont, with an emphasis on entrance and egress points and relatively high-crime areas of the city.

The Piedmont City Council approved purchase of the system in June and installation began in September. The timeline called for installation of the readers to be completed sometime between late November and the end of December.

The system will be connected to a database that can alert police to stolen cars or vehicles belonging to those with outstanding warrants.

The city already has one license plate reader, a mobile unit for a police vehicle purchased last year. It regularly identifies stolen vehicles that have been abandoned in Piedmont.
