City Commissions: 21 Openings, 37 Applicants

Piedmont City Council members will interview applicants for open slots on various city commissions and committees Thursday, then make their appointments. Here's a rundown on who has applied for what.

The Piedmont City Council will interview applicants for open positions on seven city commissions and committees Thursday and likely make its appointments immediately after the interviews. (No interview is required for incumbents applying for reappointment at the end of a current term.)

The special council meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. in the City Hall conference room, 120 Vista Ave.

Thirty-seven Piedmont residents have submitted applications for the unpaid volunteer jobs. There are a total of 21 openings on seven boards.

Here's a look at committees, commissions and applicants.

Budget Advisory and Fiscal Planning Committee, which newly elected Mayor John Chiang announced Feb. 21 that he hoped to establish within 45 days. The committee will focus on the city's municipal budget and long-term fiscal planning. Council members noted at a recent meeting that applicants with professional experience in financial planning would be especially welcome. Five vacancies, 12 applications.

Applicants are George Childs, Reid Dabney, Mary Geong, Cristina Heins, Steven Hollis, Bill Hosler, Tom Lehrkind, Jonathan Levine, Eric Lindquist, Kathleen Quenneville, Michael Rancer and Tim Rood.

CIP Review Committee. The committee makes recommendations to the city council regarding the expenditure of the capital budget (construction, repair or rehabilitation of city facilities). One vacancy, one application. Applicant is John Cooper (incumbent).

Civil Service Commission. Three vacancies, two applications. Applicants are Lisa Lawson (incumbent) and Matthew Lifschiz (incumbent).

Park Commission. Three vacancies, six applications. Applicants are Carl Anderson, Nancy Beninati, Susan Herrick (incumbent), Jason Kelley, Nancy Kent and Jamie Totsubo (incumbent).

Planning Commission. One vacancy, three applications. Applicants are Paul Nelson, Susan Ode and Tom Zhang (alternate).

Public Safety Committee, a new committee to continue the work of the previous committee of the same name. Seven vacancies, 12 applications.

Applicants are Nancy Beninati, Nancy Bostrom, George Epstein, John Erlich, Michael Gardner (previous PSC member), Sue Lin, Dean Miller, Lyman Schaffer, Elizabeth Smegal Anderson, William Welch, Patty White and Gregory Young (previous PSC member).

Recreation Commission. One vacancy, one application. Applicant is Terry London (incumbent).
