City to Name Fire Chief Monday

The Piedmont City Council is expected to appoint Interim Fire Chief Warren "Bud" McLaren to the position permanently.

The Piedmont City Council is expected to appoint Warren "Bud" McLaren as its permanent fire chief Monday.

McLaren, a long-time employee of the Piedmont Fire Department, has been serving as interim chief since the retirement of former Chief Edward Tubbs earlier this year.

McLaren was chosen from among six finalists for the position, according to a city staff report prepared for Monday's council meeting.

His initial salary will be $160,000 a year, the report says

The report provides this background information on McLaren:

McLaren was hired by the Piedmont Fire Department in 1988.

After leaving Piedmont for a brief stint, he returned to the Piedmont Fire Department in 1991 and has remained with the department ever since.

He worked his way up through the ranks, having been promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in 1999 and achieved the rank of Captain in 2002.

In his role as Captain, he has served as the Department’s training officer, fleet & apparatus officer, fire marshal, and operations section officer.

In addition, he has served as interim Chief twice, first between the departure of Chief John Speakman and the hiring of Chief Edward Tubbs and second since Chief Tubbs’ departure.

The council will meet on Monday, July 1, at 7:30 p.m. in the City Hall council chambers, 120 Vista Ave. The complete agenda and accompanying staff reports for the meeting are available on the City of Piedmont website here.
