Community Pool: Shared Use, Fees, Subsidy

UPDATE: The Recreation Commission held the second of two hearings on community pool use Wednesday night and approved staff proposals. The block schedule presented last month has been modified to include more shared use.

UPDATE, Feb. 15, 9 p.m.: Commission members unanimously approved the fees and the revised schedule. Staff members commented that eventually they expect pool operations to break even.

The Piedmont Recreation Commission will revisit usage, fees and budget for the community pool today at a 7:30 p.m. meeting and public hearing in the City Hall council chambers, 120 Vista Ave.

The meeting agenda and a detailed report on the proposed schedule are available at the City of Piedmont website.

Highlights:

  • Recreation staff are proposing a new schedule for pool use that's a bit different from the one presented at a public hearing in January. It allows for more shared use of the pool by the lap swimmers and youth swim and water polo teams, and adds an early-evening lap swim time.
  • A new fee schedule would keep most fees the same for the coming season, but eliminate the annual youth pass and combine two seasonal family pass categories -- all hours and rec swim -- into one, with a fee of $495 for residents and $570 for non-residents.
  • The staff projects that the city will need to subsidize the pool by about $350,000 per year from the general fund.
