Moraga Avenue Open to Through Traffic Again

The stretch of Moraga Avenue opposite Blair Park that was closed because of a Friday morning landslide reopened early Saturday evening

Moraga Avenue officially reopened to through traffic at 6 p.m. Saturday, Piedmont City Clerk John Tulloch said in a press release.

A stretch of Moraga from the eastern city limits just above Maxwelton Road to Red Rock Road by Coaches Field had been closed since about 7 a.m. Friday, when a landslide opposite Blair Park poured mud onto the roadway and brought down trees and power lines.

By 6:30 p.m., cars were traveling at normal speeds in both directions on Moraga Avenue and virtually no signs of the slide were visible except a low retaining barrier at the base of the hill where the slide occurred.

City of Piedmont crews worked Friday and Saturday to clean up the mess and stabilize the hillside. PG&E restored to 55 nearby households by Friday evening.

"The process of clearing the road was made more difficult by the need to ensure the stability of the hillside before the debris was removed," Tulloch said Saturday evening. "The City has worked closely with the property owner to stabilize the hillside so that no further debris is likely to fall on the road."
