Piedmont Ave. Library Will Shift to Monday-Friday Schedule

The Piedmont Avenue Branch Library, 80 Echo Ave., Oakland, will change its schedule this fall, opening on Mondays but closing on Saturdays, Oakland Public Library officials announced Tuesday.

The new schedule will go into effect on Monday, Sept. 16.

Currently the Piedmont Avenue branch is open Tuesday through Saturday, with evening hours on Tuesdays.

The new schedule will be Monday, 12:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.; Tuesday through Thursday, 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m.; Friday, noon-5:30 p.m. ; Saturday and Sunday, closed.

The nearby Montclair, Rockridge and Lakeview branch libraries will continue to be open Tuesday through Saturday, with evening hours on Tuesdays. The Main Library will continue to be open Wednesday and Thursday evenings.

“The upcoming schedule change is good news, as the library will be able to bring Monday hours to more areas of Oakland," Interim Library Director Gerry Garzón said in a statement.

"This change also adds an additional day of the week with open evening hours for further access, and allows more time for services to children during the school week.

"We will assess the public response to the new schedules in six to nine months and expect to see that the public is better served with more library access throughout the city.”

Prior to the recession, all Oakland Public Library branches were open six days a week. In 2009, service hours at branches were reduced to five days a week.  At that time the library implemented a uniform Tuesday through Saturday schedule for branches, leaving the Main Library as the only location open on Monday.
