Sports Fields Project Goes to Park Commission

The commission responsible for advising City Council on the beautification, development, and uses of Piedmont's parks considers plans for Coaches and Blair.

Tonight the Piedmont Park Commission takes on the Moraga Canyon Sports Fields Project, which includes proposals to construct sports fields in Blair Park and put up lights around Coaches Field.

Last month, the that City Council approve the lights and an updated plan for Blair presented by the Piedmont Recreational Facilities Organization, which is backing the development, over scaled-back . The rec commission, which is responsible for advising on the creation and allocation of fields in Piedmont, ultimately judged the plans based on which provided the most playing space.

Under its charge laid out out in the municipal code, the Park Commission will have to decide whether the plans for Coaches and Blair constitute "improvements."

"Does any plan respect the value of this park?" is the question the commission will have to answer, said Chair Teddy Gray King.

King said a bulleted list outlining the commission's charge would be posted in council chambers during tonight's meeting to keep the comments and discussion on point.
