School Board to Look at Money, Teacher Contracts

Note: the Board of Education is meeting tonight, Tuesday, Jan. 24, rather than on its usual Wednesday meeting date

Piedmont Unified School District's Board of Education will get a detailed — if not definitive — look tonight at how Gov. Jerry Brown's proposed budget for fiscal year 2012-13 could impact local schools.

Among the effects:

— If California voters don't approve a school funding measure on the November, 2012 ballot, mid-year budget cuts could equal the cost of three weeks of instruction.

— Even if the ballot measure passes, Brown's budget does not include funding for , a statewide program scheduled to start in 2012-13. Transitional kindergarten would serve students who miss the new, earlier cutoff dates for enrollment in regular kindergarten.

Supt. Constance Hubbard will report on how Brown's budget and various state and parcel tax scenarios could affect local schools in the next two fiscal years.

The board will also hold a final public hearing on proposed contract "reopeners" in negotiations with the Association of Piedmont Teachers (APT) and will then take action on the proposal.

The board will meet at 7 p.m. in the City Hall council chambers, 120 Vista Ave. A closed session at 6:30 p.m. to discuss labor negotiations will precede the public meeting. (Tonight's meeting, Jan. 24, is in lieu of the board's usual "fourth Wednesday" meeting.)
