A Travesty and a Scandal

The U.S. flag over the post office substation on Piedmont Avenue is in tatters.  It is so worn out that parts of it are gone.  It looks much worse than flags in museums - flags that have survived a battle.
But no one seems to notice or to care.  Repeated calls to the 41st street post office have gotten no results.  Emails to newspaper columnists have been futile.  Even the VFW has not responded to my call.  While I am not a right wing super patriot in my political views, I am distressed to see our national symbol displayed in such a careless and disrespectful way.
What could be the excuse for such negligent behavior?  Not access.  The rope that lowers and raises the flag is very accessible and well within reach of any interested person.  Cost?  How much would a new flag cost?  $50?  Is the post office so broke it can't fork over $50 for a new flag?  If so, we're in worse shape than I imagined.  And if the post office can't scrape up the money, then take the damned thing down.
What kind of message are we sending our foreign visitors with this negligence of our flag?  What will they tell their friends when they get home?
I'm going to keep writing and calling about this until someone does something.  So watch this space for more on the issue or a report of success.
