Police Blotter: Gun Scare in Park, Dancing in the Street

Not listed individually — lots and lots of false alarms from home security systems over the weekend.

Incidents highlighted in the blotter were recorded in the Piedmont Police Department log from noon on May 24 through noon, May 27. Not all incidents recorded in the log are included here. Information was supplied by the police and does not indicate any convictions.

FRIDAY, MAY 24

Suspicious circumstances — A caller reported a man on a trail in Piedmont Park with several guns lined up on a rock wall at 4:38 p.m. Police determined the man was setting up a game of Laser Tag.

DUI checkpoint — Police held a 6:30 p.m. briefing before starting a DUI/driver's license checkpoint on Grand Avenue from 7:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. For results of the checkpoint, see "Police Screen 519 Vehicles at Memorial Day Weekend DUI Checkpoint."

Petty theft — A cell phone was reported stolen while the victim was at Piedmont High School. The theft was reported at 6:38 p.m.

Disturbance — About a dozen men and women were reportedly "drinking and dancing" on Guilford Road about 8:20 p.m. Police found there was no alcohol involved and the revelers would be leaving shortly.

Armed robbery — A robbery attempt on El Cerrito Avenue was reported at 10:38 p.m. For details, see "Rifle-Toting Robber Flees Without Phone, Cash or Car."

SATURDAY, MAY 25

Vehicle fire — The Piedmont Fire Department extinguished a vehicle fire near the corner of Highland and Sheridan avenues shortly after midnight. The Toyota van was towed at the owner's request.

Vandalism — A home on Sierra Avenue was egged sometime during the previous night, the resident reported at 11:09 a.m.

SUNDAY, MAY 26

Suspicious circumstances — Two men were reported as "looking into cars" on Mountain Avenue just before 6:30 a.m. Police detained the pair and later provided them with rides to destinations of their choice in Oakland.

Possum power — A Rose Avenue resident reported that an opossum was blocking her access to a chicken coop in her backyard. She called back to say the critter had moved on but looked dehydrated.
