Weekend Things: A New Jazz Festival and a Break from Writer's Block

Other stuff happening this weekend: a glimpse into a nuclear future and a celebration of the holiday season right smack in the middle of July.

Did you know that nuclear waste remains toxic for 100,000 years? Mankind has been alive for just half of that. Into Eternity is an award-winning documentary that takes a look at the incomprehensible scientific and philosophical implications of long-term nuclear waste storage. Dust off that Santa hat and menorah, because Christmas and Hanukkah are coming to Montclair early. Stop by A Great Good Place for Books in Montclair for some gingerbread cookies, a great 15 percent off sale and a preview of upcoming books and author talks at this popular book store.

Poet and writer and education M.A. student Rachel McGee will teach a workshop on overcoming the toughest of writer's blocks. With years of experience as a poet, she will provide tools and tips on moving forward with your writing and finishing all those short stories you started years ago.

SUNDAY, JULY 24


Sure, you've taken the kids to Fairyland, and Lakeside Park is your favorite thinking place, but do you know the history of these local treasures? Join the Oakland Heritage Alliance on a walking tour to visit original Playland sets and wonder at the century-old bonsai. Kids are welcome, but not required.
