Weekend Things: Bird Calls, Gravestones and Italian Food

With choirs and bird callers performing, there's a lot of stage action coming up. That and more in Piedmont Patch's list of of weekend picks.

Friday


  • For the 46th consecutive year, students will amaze the audience with their bird calls, and even more with their quick wit as they try to out-do each other in skits and improv. The winners will appear on the Late Show with David Letterman in the fall.

  • The will perform along with the Oakland Symphony Chorus and a cast of talented singers and actors in a concert version of Kurt Weill's Tony Award-winning musical, Street Scene.

Saturday


  • Saturday brings you another docent tour at . Wear comfortable shoes, meet at the office building and learn something new about this neighborhood jewel.

  • Lakeside Theater will present a free concert for the whole family. The show features the San Francisco Chamber Orchestra's top ten string players and young Bay Area singers performing music from many countries.

  • The San Francisco author T.J. Stiles won a Pulitzer for his latest book The First Tycoon: The Epic Life of Cornelius Vanderbilt, and he will visit to talk about his work. The book follows Vanderbilt as he grows up during the Washington presidency and goes on to become one of the richest men in the history of the United States.
